国际英语新闻:Egypt hosts Sudanese opposition’s meeting to push for peace
CAIRO, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — Egypt hosted in the past two days "an important meeting" of Sudanese opposition figures to pave the way for peace in Sudan, Egyptian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.
The meeting by parties of Freedom and Change Alliance, Sudan’s opposition bloc, was held in Egypt "with the purpose of achieving peace in Sudan as a main issue that concerns all Sudanese brothers," the ministry said in a statement.
It was also held to support the constitutional declaration scheduled to be formally signed on Aug. 17 between Sudan’s opposition bloc and the ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC).
The Freedom and Change Alliance spearheaded the four-month protests in Sudan that led to the ouster of former President Omar al-Bashir in April.
The constitutional declaration reached by the opposition bloc with Sudan’s TMC seeks to outline the formation of a transitional government and a parliament for a three-year transition period.
The declaration also stipulates the creation of a governing civilian-military body to oversee the transition period.
"Egypt asserts its continuous communications with the brothers in Sudan, its neighboring states and the region to achieve peace and stability there," the Egyptian foreign ministry said in the statement.
Chaired by Lieutenant General Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, the TMC has been temporarily ruling Sudan since Bashir’s ouster.
